It’s all Black-and-White

Did you see my post last Sunday? Here is a bird that I have a few bad pictures of. I am so happy I have this one. I was walking by a cedar tree that was very dense and from the walking path, I saw a female Black-and-white Warbler coming down the trunk like a nuthatch. It hopped on a branch and I just opened fire! I zero time to think. It turns out that I was shooting ISO 250 and I had a shutter speed of 1/40th of a second. I am so-o-o-o-o-o lucky that I got this shot. The other five shots hit the cutting room floor.

Common Yellowthroat

I resisted naming this post “Return of the Bandit” as I have done in the past. It is always a joy to have the Common Yellowthroats back in town.

It is that time of year again.

This is the time of year when the leaves fill out in the hardwood canopies of the north eastern forests. It is also when the really cool warblers come through. This adds to the frustration of the time of year. Yes, when friends ask if I play golf, I always reply, “I’m a wildlife photographer. I have enough frustration in my life, thank you.”

All kidding aside, the other problem is that the warblers can be heard way up in the canopy and since they are songs I only hear during a brief period, they compete for attention in my mind with that ever present voice; “What the hell is that call, I should know what that is?”

Yah. Warbler season. Lots of fun, stiff necks and fuzzy back lit pictures. No time for golf.

This is one of my favorite warblers, the Northern Parula. I learned the call again, I must have heard about 10 today, I saw two. I got pictures of two!. Maybe I will take up golf.

Glaucous-winged Gulls, Alaska

Cruising up Misty Fjord, back behind some bend in between the walls I saw a couple of interesting gulls. They were kind enough to give me all their field marks so that I could get a good ID back in the dark room.
